Synopsis:

In Wishful Drinking, Carrie Fisher tells the true and intoxicating story of her life with inimitable wit. Born to celebrity parents, she was picked to play a princess in a little movie called Star Wars when only 19 years old. “But it isn’t all sweetness and light sabres.” Alas, aside from a demanding career and her role as a single mother (not to mention the hyperspace hairdo), Carrie also spends her free time battling addiction, weathering the wild ride of manic depression and lounging around various mental institutions. It’s an incredible tale – from having Elizabeth Taylor as a stepmother, to marrying (and divorcing) Paul Simon, from having the father of her daughter leave her for a man, to ultimately waking up one morning and finding a friend dead beside her in bed.

Pros:

  • Carrie Fisher is actually amazing
  • near-tears-at-all-time funny
  • takes life and whatever terrible things happen with the most, well, not positive, but good way I ever encountered

Cons:

  • I have none

Verdict:

I had an idea of it but not before I read this book that I realised how much I fucking love Carrie Fisher. She is truly amazing. And completely bunkers, which makes me love her even more. She talks about mostly terrible things that happened in her life: her parents’ tumultuous love lives, her substance abuse problems, her mental illnesses, the death of a close friend in her bed… But I never felt once sad while reading this. Because Fisher doesn’t want your pity or sorrow. She looks at life as something to be lived without not a lot of seriousness and I think that’s amazing. She jokes all the time and she is hilarious. Some may find her jokes a bit too out of line but I don’t share that conception. If you take life too seriously, maybe this will be a good book for you. It’s helping me shape a lot of my new attitude, that’s for sure.

Have any of you read this book? Let me know your thoughts on it, please!

See you guys soon,

Cat.
