Here is my review for Batgirl’s latest trade paperback! This is Batgirl, Vol.1: Beyond Burnside, by Hope Larson and Raphael Albuquerque.

- terrible, cheesy villain
- the art is a real let down
- something that make Batgirl’s story the best is her relationships with her friends and their absolutely not present in this volume
- this is overall boring
Verdict:
I had a feeling I wasn’t really going to deal well with the new run of Batgirl. Stewart, Fletcher and Tarr were my dream team so I was reticent for this one. Unfortunately, my doubts were justified. From page one, I was disappointed with the art and the colours used. It’s more comic book-y than what I am used to in the titles I pick, and the use of faded oranges, browns and greens were just not my thing. So, that left a sour taste in my mouth but I was still willing to give it a try. But not even the story was worth it. It was mostly boring. I missed Bab’s friends and her relationships with them. She’s pretty much alone but for a love interest that wasn’t really interesting or engaging. It’s just there for plot sake. At least I was interested in understanding the villain’s plot. Until it’s just told to you in the most cheesy way. Their reasons are terrible and it’s just so lame, something out of a pulp comic. It’s literally laid out in some speech. Urgh, I hated it! I rolled my eyes to the back of my head and I was still pissed. Actually, the more I think about this title, the more I start to dislike it. I might continue this series but probably just because I love Batgirl too much. In fact, I’ve read other Hope Larson works but I wasn’t really blown away by them so I’m really not that surprised.
